Many cars have the same engine as more powerful models in the same range. The manufacturers simply down tune the engines to make the higher priced model more attractive.
Also engines are designed for worldwide markets, often where the fuel quality is poor in comparison to UK fuel. Therefore the engine is modified to cope in these markets - and then never tuned for optimal performance in the UK.
